East London Printmakers

Hilary Rosen

I was born and bred in London by the sound of Bow Bells , if they had been working. attended schools in London so my the urban environment has always been a theme in my work. I attended Leicester poly to do my foundation , where I learned etching , litho painting plus repainted and decorated derelict houses. Drank too much Barley wine but had a great time. I then went to Trent , Nottingham and continued painting , printing and was given watercolours , sable brushes and paper plus a stipend to go to Berlin. Here I saw Grosz , Dix , Beckman and Kollwitz. A life changing experience. After Nottingham , I went to the Painting School at the R.C.A. where I did a lot of printmaking too and won a prize. I made prints concerning the same narrative as my paintings and still work in the same way. For example, a Jazz scene in acrylic ,,I will make prints with a similar composition and colours. I then was given a bursary and attended Central School to do a part time printmaking course. I have a studio in Bethnal Green , bought myself a table top press , had ve been exhibiting since that time both in Europe and England .
