Emily Heasman
My practice explores the tension between environmental awareness and the difficulty of living those values materially. I am interested in interconnectivity and in challenging anthropocentric ways of thinking. Through material and process, I question the separation between human and non-human worlds. I work with screen etch resist, lithography, monoprinting, and photographic imagery. My images are drawn from the natural environment. I am particularly interested in moments of light in trees and in organisms such as mushrooms, which play a vital role within ecosystems. These subjects point to interdependence and offer quieter, less human-centred ways of seeing. Colour is central to my practice. I work with natural pigments and am drawn to the softer, more nuanced tones they produce. Through colour, layering, and process, I aim to shift the viewer into an altered state of perception. The work encourages close observation and raises questions around responsibility in uncertain ecological conditions.
