Artist Talk with Douglas White, part of ELP’s Artist Talk Series

Since graduating from the RCA in 2005 Douglas has worked and exhibited across the world in locations as diverse Belize, Malta, Abu Dhabi, Tel Aviv and, most recently the Carribean island of St Barth.

The talk will take a poetic journey through these material landscapes and explore a personal mythology of elemental forces that inform his work- fire, water, earth and air.

Fouzia Zafar

Statement

Fouzia’s work incorporates paint, print and video on themes such as the strangeness of memory, family histories, migration and absence. Her figureless interiors and looming objects create a nostalgic ghostly atmosphere and point to traces of humanity.

She describes play as a key concept of her work. Play encompasses repeatedly finding, composing and constructing new tools and processes to explore objects’ history, surfaces, and qualities, whilst also constructing new narratives. Her work flickers between reality and fiction and use of pictorial language and processes.

In 2013 Fouzia completed her MA in Fine Art at the City and Guilds of London Art School with distinction. Upon graduating she received the Gwen May Student Award, from the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and became an associate member of the society. In 2012 she was shortlisted for the Clifford Chance Postgraduate Printmaking Award. Recent exhibitions include: The London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy, The London Print Studio & Bainbridge Open. Fouzia was born in Glasgow but is currently based in London.

New Wood Block Courses

Check out our upcoming wood block courses at East London Printmakers!

First up … Wood Engraving

elp chris pig at work

Master printmaker Chris Pig is teaching a wood engraving course at ELP next month.

Wood engraving is a traditional printmaking technique developed by English engraver Thomas Bewick in the late 18th Century. In the 19th Century the technique was widely used for book illustration.

Wood engraving is favoured by Daumier and Doré for the delicate line work you can achieve and for fine, crisp detail.

Chris cuts and prepares the wood blocks himself for the course! So at the beginning of the course you’ll get a lovingly prepared and highly polished block and you’ll learn the basics of cutting and printing blocks.
