Chine Collé for the Intaglio Printmaker

Workshop leader: Dena Schuckitt

Chine collé is the process by which a thin sheet of paper is adhered between ink and thicker backing paper during the printing process. Thin Asian papers, like Japanese Gampi, add subtle sheen, luminosity and warmth to an image printed on white paper, and they can also bring out the most delicate etched details on a plate. Dyed papers introduce colour when cut into shapes and colléd to the print.

This day-long workshop will delve into the traditional methods of chine collé for archival and stable results, and also explore more experimental and spontaneous techniques.

We’ll cook up a batch of wheat paste from scratch and then prepare chin collé directly on top of our etched, inked plates, slicing sheets of Gampi/Hosho right along plate edges for a perfect fit. We’ll experiment with pre-gluing larger batches for later use during editioning, and we’ll use chin collé to collage and layer coloured elements into our prints.

**Please bring a small etched plate of zinc or copper to work with!**  I’ll bring the rest
