Evening workshops
These workshops take place on Wednesdays from 7pm to 10pm.
Photo-polymer (4 evenings)
Workshop leader: Victoria Browne
During this workshop you will be given a hands-on introduction to photosensitive polymer plates. You will be shown how to make your own prints using digital files under the guidance of an experienced tutor. Polymer plates are used for both intaglio (polymergravure) and relief techniques (flexoprinting) and can produce prints with great detail, richness and texture. The aim of this workshop is to give you an idea of the possibilities of the medium.
This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some previous experience. All materials will be provided. Oil-based inks and some solvents will be used in this workshop.

Bookbinding 2
Workshop leader: Katy Goutefangea
This workshop is for students who have completed the bookbinding introductory course (Bookbinding 1). During this one evening workshop students will learn how to produce a single signature book with a hard cover. The addition of a hardcover to a small bound project can offer more protection to the content and also give a more professional finish. By the end of the class students will have the confidence to produce a single signature hardbound book at home.
Katy Goutefangea is a printmaker and practising visual artist living and working in London. She has many years of printmaking experience and has been teaching art workshops since 2008. As well making her own bound projects she works on commissions for outside clients and artists.

Introduction to Screenprinting on paper (4 evenings)
Workshop leader: Katy Goutefangea
During this workshop you will be given a hands on introduction to screenprinting on paper. You will be shown how to turn your drawings, photographs, graphics, and designs into stencils to create screenprints. Over the four evenings you will learn the fundamentals of screenprinting: from how to plan a project to all the technical details required to produce a print in the studio including; using a vacuum bed, registering accurately, handling and processing screens, mixing inks and exposing images on the UV box.
After completion of the course you will be able to confidently plan projects and use the studio during open access sessions to produce your own screen printed work.

Introduction to Etching (5 evenings)
Workshop leader: Katy Goutefangea
During this workshop you will be given a hands-on introduction to etching on zinc. You will be shown how to make your own prints using a variety of techniques under the guidance of an experienced tutor. Etching is a medium with a long and varied history and can produce prints with great detail, richness and texture. The aim of this workshop is to give you an idea of the possibilities of the medium and a thorough introduction to hard and soft ground (line, pattern and texture) and aquatint (tone or shade).
This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some previous experience. All materials will be provided. Oil-based inks and some solvents will be used in this workshop.

Bookbinding 1&2
Workshop leader: Katy Goutefangea
During this workshop you will be given a hands on introduction to the fundamentals of bookbinding. You will be shown the correct way to fold, cut and bind small projects using just a few specialist tools that can be easily and inexpensively bought and used at home . You will learn how to bind both soft cover and hard cover books. Bookbinding is a valuable and versatile skill that has been creatively used by artists and crafts people for centuries. Whether you are interested in producing inspired notebooks or creating small editions, the one day course will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to work independently at home.

Printing on Textiles
Workshop leader: Catherine Walsh
Over 5 evening sessions you will learn how to block print and screen print on fabric. The workshops will cover lino-cutting and printing with blocks on fabric, preparing stencils for screenprinting using handmade stencils and photographic stencils and guided practice with printing on fabric to enable you to realize your designs as succesful textile prints.
The first evening will be on block printing using linoleum in the style of traditional woodblock printing, the second session will cover preparing a design for screenprinting and screenprinting with hand-cut stencils, the third and fourth sessions will cover screenprinting using photo-stencils and the final session will be open for further practice with your preferred medium.
This course is suitable for beginners or anyone who would like to learn in a hands-on way how to print on textiles.

Intermediate Linocut
Workshop leader: Chris Pig
A six week course designed for those who already have some knowledge of linocut. The theme is autobiography and students will be working on a block, 30x30cm as their core piece of work; adapting to this format a design that reflects elements of their life and personal identity. There is scope to add more designs to this and experiment with the medium, with colour, texture, format and so on. The finished design will be editioned so that each participant goes away with a box set of work from the whole group.

Introduction to Linocut
Workshop leader: Chris Pig
This six-week course demonstrates how to adapt a design to lino, then cut it and print it to a professional standard. Once this has been done we can then start experimenting and working on further designs. A full brief is sent to the students before they start so that on the first evening the design can be transferred to the block straight away. There will be a strong emphasis on health and safety and good studio practice.

Introduction to Screenprinting on fabric (5 evenings)
Workshop leader: Lydie Gallais
On this course you will learn how to print images onto fabric. This allows you to create various objects, such as cushion-covers, curtains, fashion accessories, bed spreads, as well as print onto t-shirts. It is suggested that you have object in mind before starting.
On the first evening you will learn how to coat a screen using photo emulsion. You will then expose an image of your choice; maybe your own drawing, a photograph, a cut out or a newspaper image (the image should be a good quality black and white photocopy or acetate print). Then you will mix fabric inks and start screen-printing.
On the second evening you will learn how to register so that your image can have several colours.
On the third and fourth evenings you will carry on with your project or start a new one. You will also learn how to remove the image from the screen.
On the last evening you will be working independently under my supervision so that you put into practise what you have learnt during the previous sessions.
This course is fun, packed-full of information, and suitable for beginners or people who need to refresh their memories about fabric printing.

Introduction to Screenprinting on paper (5 evenings)
Workshop leader: Lydie Gallais
This workshop is both for beginners and for people who need to refresh their screen-printing skills. At the end of the 5 weeks you should be very confident about printing any type of image onto paper. This is a fun, information-packed course.
You will need to bring an image of your choice to work with; maybe a drawing, a photograph or a newspaper image, photocopied onto paper or acetate. Make sure the black and white shows as the machine reads grey as black.
On the first evening you will be printing and planning your design using cut-out techniques. You will learn how to mix inks to get the right consistency for the best results.
During the second evening, you will learn how to expose and coat a screen using photo emulsion. You will then expose your image.
On the third evening you will learn how to register your image and print it using a variety of colours.
On the fourth evening, you will be carrying on with your project using registration. I will also answer any questions about screen-printing and review what you have learnt.
On the last session you to work independently under my supervision to make sure you have understood all the processes that you have learned during the previous weeks.

Experimental Collagraphs
Workshop leader: Amanda Taylor
In this 5 week workshop you will learn how to make a collagraph plate by creating a variety of different textures on a thin board, creating a low relief. From this, prints will be produced using scrim, brushes and rollers to create different effects and build up colour on the various plate levels before running it through the press. There should be an opportunity to experiment with applications of carborundum, masking techniques and the use of chine collé to add depth and colour to your prints. This workshop is suitable for both beginners and those with experience who want to further their skills.

Experimental Linocuts
Workshop leader: Wuon Gean Ho
From the dramatic bold lines of political woodcut prints, to the multicoloured joyous lines in Picasso's still life prints, Japanese vinyl prints allow for an instant freedom of expression. The block is denser and finer than traditional linoleum. Learn how to make relief prints in black and white, and how to print them in different ways to get exciting effects. Over the three evenings you can try out experimental mark making, monoprinting, printing with an intaglio press and multi-block printing for making colour images. Come prepared to be inspired by a wide range of print art, to experiment and have fun!

Taster Course (5 evenings)
Workshop leader: Victoria Browne
As an introduction to East London Printmakers's studio, the aim is to offer experience of different printmaking techniques. You will familiarise yourself with the studio equipment and try your hand at screen-printing, linocut-printing, dry-point and hard-ground etching. This workshop is ideal for beginners.
All materials will be provided. Oil-based inks will be used in this workshop. After completion of a Taster Course and to book onto Open Access, attendees must gain further experience via an additional printmaking workshop.
