Background
Nick Morley is an artist and illustrator working in London. His idiosyncratic and wryly humourous take on the human condition manifests itself through drawings, prints, books and interactive works.
The major themes in Nick’s work are masculinity, heroism, human achievement and man’s efforts to leave his mark on the world. Recent subjects include hunters, wrestlers and bearded men. Most of the images are drawn from amateur documentary photography, both found on the internet, in old books and magazines and the artist's own photographs.
Nick has used a wide variety of printmaking processes over the last ten years. Through these processes his images take on a life of their own, being given a gravitas at odds with their nature. The images are painstakingly produced, sometimes incorporating almost obsessive levels of detail. In this way a seemingly frivolous subject is lent an unexpected importance, forcing the viewer to re-evaluate his or her preconceptions.
Nick has exhibited widely across the UK and abroad. His work has been featured on BBC2 in a documentary about the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in which it was picked out as a favourite by comedian Vic Reeves. Illustration clients include Prospect magazine and Penguin.
